My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I'm a lover of Sherlock Holmes in all his permutations--TV shows, movies, modern settings, exotic settings, a female Holmes, Holmes as a warlock, etc. All of them.
This, however, is Sherlock Classic, with the regular Sherlock in his regular setting, told by the regular Watson. And it's awesome.
This story is told as if an aging Watson wants to finally tell about a case he had kept to himself. Watson is a little more thoughtful here, more aware of the choices he is making and critical of some of the choices he made in the past, but still clearly the same Watson. And the Sherlock he reveals is the same Sherlock. The tone, the language, the details--all just so.
Horowitz's clever plot tells the story of a pair of interconnected crimes, and it's no spoiler to say that some of the revelations are truly surprising but exactly in the mold of the original stories. [All the "I saw that coming a mile away" people, please pat yourselves on the back in silence... ;) ]
Lots of fun, lots of surprises, excellent action, a touch of grit--this is a fine novel and an excellent Sherlock adventure.
Somehow, I already own the sequel, which is perfect. Time to open it up. :)
