The Golden Age Of Scalzi Is Now

The Human Division (Old Man's War, #5)The Human Division by John Scalzi
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I always love John Scalzi's books.

He is the master of mixing compelling science fiction stories with characters you care about, action, suspense, mystery, and always, always humor. I very seldom interrupt my wife's reading to read something aloud, but I do that (did it last night) when I read John Scalzi. And then we laugh. He's not writing comedy, he's writing humans, but when done right, with a light touch, which includes a wry tone that is not overdone, humans are hilarious. (Dialogue especially.)

This is the 5th book in the Old Man's War series, so the universe is well-established, though the characters here are mostly new. It still works. I'll read books that aren't fun on every page or every chapter, pushing through, but what a pleasure to read a book that's entertaining pretty much every moment.

Also, fwiw, Scalzi is known for writing strong female characters, and he does not disappoint. As always, some of the best characters in this novel are smart, kick-ass women in leadership roles.

Fun novel, well written. Recommended.
