My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I'm not a regular reader of this genre, but I love Jane Austen and I've enjoyed Georgette Heyer ever since I was introduced to her, a year or two ago. This is the fourth of her books I've read, and it was as fun as any, though it was not quite as satisfying as some--so 4/5 stars. Good, pleasant, entertaining, recommended. That's good enough.
The author also wrote mysteries, and in some ways this novel would fit that category a little better than Regency romance. More energy is devoted to who might want to kill the protagonist than is spent on Drusilla, the love interest. In fact, I liked her a lot and would have preferred to see more chapters and scenes with her in it. The conclusion is a bit rushed, which is why it was not quite as satisfying...
But that's putting it in a negative light. On the whole, it's a book well worth reading and enjoying if you like Regency novels of any type--romance, mystery, manners--and I'm perfectly happy picking up the next book by the author. I've only got one left on hand, and then I'll have to go back to eBay to find some others... maybe some actual mysteries this time. Hmm.
P.S. I had this thought before, but why aren't there movies made of her books? I'm certain Jane Austen fans would love them. Must be a reason.
Anyway.
