Where Young Enola Holmes Impresses

The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets (Enola Holmes, #3)The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets by Nancy Springer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Good book. Excellent fun. :)

I enjoyed the movie, which got me to read the first couple books, which I also liked, and this is the third--which I thought was the best so far.

The author does a great job of making Enola Holmes very capable and resourceful while still being vulnerable. She's awesome, like her brother, able to find witnesses, gather clues, and make something of what she's gathered, but she's still a girl alone in an uncaring, dangerous city. Both aspects of her situation are essential. If she were too capable the stakes would be too low; if she were too overwhelmed she wouldn't be any fun to read about. To keep the pages turning, the author keeps the two aspects in nice tension.

This story, with the premise already set by the first pair of books, takes off right from the beginning and sprints all the way to the end. Nothing is wasted, no scene is extra, and though it's YA and (potentially) less compelling for adults, I found it a great pleasure to read. I'm a big fan of Sherlock's little sister and look forward to bunches of sequels.

Recommended.
