Where Enola Proves Herself

The Case of the Gypsy Good-Bye (Enola Holmes, #6)The Case of the Gypsy Good-Bye by Nancy Springer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This series gets better from book to book, and this sixth in the series is a real pleasure to read. I found it both entertaining and emotionally satisfying, which is a lot for a short novel.

Enola is an excellent MC: she is limited but adventurous; capable but imperfect; intelligent but not unbeatable. I find her wholly sympathetic, and parts of the last chapter in particular are very touching. Yes, I got choked up while reading a young person's mystery, and it wasn't the first time. :)

(Crying into the deep fur of her affectionate dog, Enola briefly wished her mother had been more like a dog. OMG.)

The mystery is enjoyable and works fine, though it perhaps relies a bit too much on lucky coincidences. I didn't mind. Besides solving a mystery, Enola succeeds in proving her worth to her doubting brother, a wonderful cheer-for-the-girl moment, and that carries the day..

I recommend the whole series. I haven't read the final novel yet, but we're 6/6 at this point, so I feel lucky.
