What Happens in Bath Stays in Bath

Jane and the Wandering Eye (Jane Austen Mysteries, #3)Jane and the Wandering Eye by Stephanie Barron
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Working my way back through these books--and enjoying them a little more, even, than the first time.

The mysteries are very clever, the plotting tight, and the action lots of fun. As always, the settings and period research are excellent, and the language is perfect. But most of all, the characters, Jane herself most of all, are wonderfully drawn. These early novels in the series have the so-called Gentleman Rogue, who is one of the few who knows how to appreciate Jane's merits, so it's fun to see them solving mysteries together.

My only struggle is filing away the details of the action and the many minor characters to keep track of clues and red herrings. I'm finding it's a skill that improves with time and effort. Extra tricky in this one, as the murder takes place at a masquerade party, with so many suspects in disguise. But the solution is logical and works very well.

Who's gonna make these books into a TV series? We're ready. Come on!
